Thank you, for attending Parent/Teacher Conferences on March 28.  The educational research confirms that children with parents who are actively involved in their child’s education are more successful.  Please keep up your involvement all the way through high school graduation

WHAT IS TRIG*STAR?

Trig-Star is an annual high school mathematics competition based on the practical application of Trigonometry.  Students that participate are not only provided with an opportunity to earn scholarship awards, but also leave with a better understanding of the technical profession of Geomatics, which includes Land Surveying and Mapping.

The purpose of the Trig-Star program is: a) To promote excellence in the mastery of mathematics in high school. b) To honor high school students who have demonstrated their superior skill among classmates at the high school, state, and national levels. c) To acquaint the high school students with the use and practical applications of mathematics in the surveying profession. d) To build awareness of Land Surveying as a profession among mathematically skilled high school students, career guidance counselors, and high school math teachers.  This annual competition is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors.

Kurt Luebke, a professional land surveyor out of Missoula, volunteers his time to visit with Drummond High School students about the profession of surveying, and demonstrates the use of surveying equipment.  The students will also take a 1-hour timed exam, during which they must solve problems that incorporate trigonometry.  Winners are determined by the most correct answers in the fastest time and have the opportunity to win a few hundred to several thousand dollars in scholarship monies.  Mrs. Corlett’s Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus students will be participating in the regional Trig*Star competition on Monday April 16th.

NEW HEALTH REPORT

Along with the national emphasis on healthy kids, changes in our school lunches to promote healthy eating, and physical education to promote healthy, life-long activities, we are going to start reporting “BMI” percentile on your K-8th children. BMI stands for body mass index, a measure of body fatness determined by a correlation of height and weight without actually measuring body fat. Research over years has shown this is a reliable calculation of BMI. BMI as a number is charted on a children’s (from 2-20 years) percentile chart for each child, boy or girl. A percentile from 5% to 85% is considered the norm, below 5% is underweight, from 85% to 95% is overweight, and above 95% is obese. This information is to reassure you and/or encourage you to move your family lifestyle in a healthier direction. Information links include www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/, on the left click on “assessing weight”, then “child and teen- about BMI”; and www.healthychildren.org, search for BMI, then the first result “Determining Body Mass Index”.

ANNUAL SCHOOL ELECTION

The date for the annual school election is the 8th of May and will be conducted at the regular polling places, which are the Drummond School/Community Library and the Hall School from 12:00 until 8:00 PM.  Merri Henderson has filed a nominating petition for a three-year term for the Drummond School Districts No. 11 and 2, as has trustee incumbent Chris Burgmeier and Patricia Bignell for the seat on the high school board which is filled by a representative from the Hall school district.   A qualified elector may still file to run for these positions by filing a “Declaration of Intent as a Write-in Candidate”.  These forms may be picked up at the district office at the Drummond School and must be returned by the deadline of 5:00 on April 12, 2012.

The trustees for Drummond School Districts # 11 (elementary) and #2 (high school) are uncertain at this time about the possibility of running a mill levy as the 2012-2013 budget formation is still in progress. The districts are facing revenue shortfalls due to a decline in enrollment.
